So, apparently, there's a new movie out about Nim Chimpsky. I myself have not seen it. This sort of thing does not play in our local theatre. But those who have seen it say it is quite shocking. Bow and I, stuck together in our pens, have watched the trailer several times. The first time he watched it, Bow was transfixed, and he stayed perfectly still.
The second time he watched it, he said it was stupid. Lawrence asked him: "Well, what did you think of that video?" Bow replied: "I think it is stupid."
Today, I brought the laptop into the pen for Bow to watch the video embedded in my PubWages editorial. Here is a video of what happened:
As you can see, Bow can be trusted with a laptop under close supervision. But he has his own way of using the equipment.

He certainly seems to be excited about it! It will be very interesting to see what he thinks of the whole movie! Too bad they probably won't let him see it in the theater!
ReplyDeleteYes, he was very excited about it. I'm not sure whether showing him the whole movie is advisable, once it comes out on DVD, because even primatologists who have seen it think it is shocking. Other reviews have said it is so disturbing that they did not advise people who care about this subject deeply to watch it, in that it brings out problems without offering solutions, and shows both humans and chimpanzees in a very unflattering light.
ReplyDeleteI do plan to see the movie myself, because I feel I need to know what it contains, but the decision of whether to show it to Bow or Sword really depends on my assessment of the whole after I have viewed it. Bow is very sensitive to what he perceives as "bad", and I don't want to upset him unnecessarily. He does know the overall story of Nim Chimpsky's life, though, in a cleaned up version.
